Several people were killed in Jos, Plateau State on Palm Sunday, 29 March 2026, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on people in the streets of Jos North Local Government Area (LGA).
The Daily Post reports the attack happened around 8pm in the Angwan Rukuba community on Sunday. Local partners share that the affected community is Christian majority, and the street where the attack happened is a popular gathering place for locals. The gunmen shot indiscriminately into the busy but dark street. Not all the deceased are Christians.
The death toll after the attack in Anguwan Rukuba is unconfirmed. Initial media reports estimated the deaths between 6 and 10 people. The exact figures remain unverified. However, local contacts confirmed 27 bodies were returned to the community. Of these, 14 died on the scene and 13 died in hospital.
The Plateau state government ordered a 48-hour curfew “following the tragic incident” that resulted in the loss of lives. Several others were injured. The curfew is from midnight of 29 March until the 1st of April 2026.
According to a statement from the government Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang “strongly condemns this barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
At this stage, nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack. Contacts on the ground are still gathering information. There is a lot of speculation right now about who is responsible, but until we have clarity from our local contacts, we will not add to speculation.
A local, Janet Pam, spoke to Punch who said her neighbour was returning from the evening service on Palm Sunday when he was also shot dead.
The University of Jos (UNIJOS) is located in this part of Jos and postponed exams scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, according to The Daily Post.
