Thank you for praying! On Friday, 8 August 2025, the government of Chad released the eight Christian youths who had been arrested more than a month ago during an evangelism campaign in N’Djamena, Chad.
On 21 June, eight youths (seven male and one female) from different churches came together to evangelise in the Kamda, Amtoukouin, and Sabangali neighbourhoods. Before the end of their mission, they were arrested and taken to the central Police Station before being taken to an unknown destination.
The parents of the students, faith actors, as well as the Entente des Églises et missions Évangéliques du Tchad (EEMET), have called for the students to be released.
Open Doors Field sources say the students were freed by the Attorney General, having found them not guilty. They were each received by their parents and are now with their respective families.
No related party has yet made a public statement about their release.
Christians Viewed as Foreign Agents
In a context of violence and coups, Christians are often seen as allies to the ‘other side’ and as ‘foreign agents’. Although the Constitution promises religious freedom, local authorities frequently refuse to recognise Muslim-to-Christian conversions, and mandatory church registration adds another layer of difficulty.
Chad’s legal and political environment is characterised by hostility towards dissent, limited freedom of expression and assembly, a lack of free and fair elections, and rampant nepotism.
Chad is a secular republic, but Islam is the majority religion and pervades the whole of society causing some Chadians to show hostility and intolerance towards Christians whom they regard as ‘infidels’.
Please continue praying for Chad:
- Thank God for these students’ release.
- Pray the Lord encourages them and heals them from any trauma they deal with after their detention.
- Please continue to pray for political stability in Chad. Pray God will touch the hearts of the country’s leaders so they act in a way that is beneficial to all its citizens.
