On New Year’s Eve, 2025, extremists in central Nigeria attacked the village of Bum, a mostly Christian community. By the time they left, nine were dead and several homes burned to the ground.
“My father, brother, and one of my sons were murdered when these [extremists] knocked on our door,” one villager told an Open Doors’ local partner. “They also went to my uncle’s house and killed five people, and they also killed one person in another house.”
Islamic extremists target Christian communities in the hope of extinguishing the Church. They know that no one (not even governments) helps Christians. Before attacking they taunt, asking, “Where is your God now?”

In a small rural northern Nigerian village, Pastor Josiah stands alongside his daughter Salama* at the edge of a mass grave, where he has just led the village in a time of remembrance for all those they have lost.
The mass grave is simple, in fields at the village’s edge, marked by rocks laid in the shape of a cross.
This father and daughter know how their community feels. They have lost many members of their own family to the same violence—the extremism currently besieging parts of Sub- Saharan Africa.
“Here in this grave are 22 people who were killed. All of them were Christians. Just like how my wife and children were killed.” Josiah says, pinching away tears. “All we want is for the killings of Christians in Nigeria and Africa to stop.”
