Venezuela: Death Toll Rises As Crucial Aid Restricted

Thousands of volunteers and supply trucks remain stuck at checkpoints, while uncertainty persists over the true number of missing persons.

Two weeks after double earthquakes struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026—magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, the most powerful ever recorded in the country since 1900—the city of La Guaira, declared a disaster zone, bears the brunt of the destruction, with more than 100 buildings collapsed in Caraballeda and Catia La Mar.

Death Toll Growing

The search continues for around 16,000 people in La Guaira who remain missing. As of 1 July 2026, the official regional toll stands at 1,943 dead, 10,571 injured, 15,866 affected, and 6,461 rescued alive.

These figures specifically relate to La Guaira. At the national level, the picture is more dire. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) report that more than 50,000 people remain missing across the country including in Miranda, Falcón, Carabobo, and Yaracuy.

Gianluca Rampolla del Tindaro, UN Resident Coordinator in Venezuela, noted that authorities have agreed to acquire 10,000 body bags as part of the effort to estimate the scale of the disaster.

Volunteers Lead Rescue Effort

Thousands of volunteers and relief organisations have been mobilised for rescue efforts, humanitarian assistance, and care for affected families. According to recent reports, more than 7,800 people have registered specifically to help in La Guaira, while more than 15,000 have registered as volunteers for rescue and relief work nationwide. Teams from more than 30 countries have also joined the search efforts.

Authorities Delay Crucial Aid

Adding to the scale of the tragedy are restrictions and controls imposed on access to the affected area.

Multiple outlets have reported checkpoints, authorisation requirements, and mobility difficulties that are delaying the entry of volunteers, supply trucks, medicine, food, and other essential aid.

The militarisation of La Guaira, involving thousands of troops from the Bolivarian National Guard, the Armed Forces, and the police, has also hindered the entry of national rescue teams.

Firefighters have reported being blocked from reaching critical sectors where their presence is urgently needed. According to the World Health Organisation, Venezuela’s Ministry of Health went as far as denying entry to medical personnel from Austria and Germany.

Daniel*, a volunteer pastor with Open Doors in Venezuela, describes the situation when trying to enter the city.

“We’re stuck at the entrance to La Guaira, held at a checkpoint for over half an hour with no one allowed through, and there are trucks and vehicles full of supplies that can’t get in, blocked by the very authorities who are supposed to help.”

His testimony illustrates a paradox facing hundreds of volunteers right now. The aid exists, it’s ready and on its way, but it isn’t reaching those who need it most.

Please pray:

  • That God will open doors, remove every obstacle, and allow aid to reach affected communities in time,
  • That He will protect the volunteers risking their time and safety in this effort, and
  • That He will strengthen those still waiting for provisions and grant wisdom to the authorities so that access and distribution of humanitarian aid can be made possible.
