What Does Persecution Look Like?

Persecution in the DRC mostly takes the form of violent attacks. The extremist group, Alliance for Democratic Forces, is responsible for many incidents of persecution, attacking Christians and churches. In one district, there are only four remaining Evangelical churches. There used to be 24.

Christian women are often abducted and subjected to sexual abuse and forced labour, while men can face torture, forced recruitment into extremist groups, and murder.

Who Is Most Vulnerable To Persecution?

Converts from both Islam and tribal religions face pressure to take part in non-Christian religious activities and ceremonies. Some find themselves discriminated against in the workplace and denied the opportunity to work. Christian leaders who advocate against corruption and violence risk facing harassment and interference from local authorities.

Believers face violent persecution from Islamic extremists who are particularly active in the eastern part of the country.

– Pray that persecution will not discourage Christians but encourage them further into their faith.

– Pray that pastors will courageously remain and prepare the church for persecution.

– Pray for the physical, emotional, and spiritual healing of those affected by extremism.
