Nepal: Warning for a Second Flood

Nepal’s government has warned that the country could face a second flood. A landslide-created lake on the Nepal-China border has begun overflowing due to blockages upstream.

Nepalese authorities are evacuating people from downstream districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan, as well as communities along the Trishuli and Narayani rivers. Residents, rescuers, and travellers are being urged to move to higher ground and avoid riverbanks. Rescue operations are also being affected.

According to the latest reports, the devastating flash floods on 26 August have killed nearly 900 people and left over 3,000 people missing, including security personnel and foreign tourists.

“As a ministry, we are devastated by the tragic flash floods that have killed hundreds of people in Nepal,” shares Open Doors partner, Raju*. “Our local contacts have confirmed that the flood has swept away villages and destroyed several roads, along with local hydropower infrastructure. This is a major disaster that has left many families homeless and without access to basic necessities.

“We are currently trying to connect with churches in the area to determine what needs they may have. Through our long-term partnerships in Nepal, we know at least 30 believers (and likely more) are dead, and many are missing as well. In the meantime, the best thing you can do is to pray. Please pray for all the victims and their families and that the Nepali government would be able to care for the people impacted by this disaster.”

Please pray:

  • Pray for the situation in Nepal as the country faces the possibility of a second flood.
  • Pray that conditions become safer and the rescue operations can resume.
  • Pray for the people in the low-lying areas and districts to be able to move to safer locations.
  • Pray for strength and safety for the government, authorities, and army personnel who are fully involved in the ongoing rescue operations.
  • Pray especially for our team as they strive to reach out to the communities who are grieving and facing tremendous uncertainty. Pray for wisdom, safety, strength, and open doors to bring help and hope to those affected.

The light of the Underground Church is bright

THE DARKNESS CANNOT OVERCOME IT

Persecutors hope that by crushing Christians they will kill the Church. But the Church can’t be killed. In countries like China and Laos, it simply moves underground. And it’s growing—secretly and out of sight.

Your gift today will equip and strengthen underground believers.
